I am going to add some weights to my tractor,I will be dragging logs etc,I have the R-4 tires.I seen where John Deere literature I have says you can add 3 60 lbs weight per rear wheel,and up to 10 70 lb weights on the front with the front weight bracket extension,would this be more than enough? What would be a good amount to put on my JD 4400,also where is a good place to buy chains for the rear tires? How does the Bush Hog brand loaders compare to the JD brand price wise and ease of attatchment and durability?

Just for information, I do not use added weights on the rear to drag logs out of the woods. I use the weight of the log for traction, by lifting one end off the ground with my 3pt. Weight on the front of the tractor is taken care of with the FEL. This technique will keep the logs (for the most part) out of the dirt which helps if sawing lumber and when crosscutting for shorter lengths and/or firewood. There is great traction when using this technique. I built an arch for the 3pt that has a large hook for chains and/or logging tongs. With the tongs and a little luck, sometimes you do not have to get off the tractor to hook up to the log. Oak logs, up to 24 inches in diameter on the small end and up to 12 feet long can be moved easily. Sometimes the individual rear brakes are needed to steer, as the front end can get a little light depending on the log size. Care must be taken to adjust the weight of the log on the tractor by raising (for more weight) or lowering (for less weight) the 3pt arms. Hope this helps. ....

Thanks for the tip, I like the idea of the three point hook up you made for dragging the logs,do you use the draw bar too?(I guess you probably do or it wouldnt be a 3 point hookup. ....

I do not use the drawbar. It is too low to hook to, causing the leading end of the log to dig into the ground (thus a lot of dirt on the log) when pulled. The three points are the top arm and the two lift arms. Picture an upside down U that would drop down over a log. Then the top point is pinned to the top arm and also is equipped with a hook (or a place to attach the chain). Then when the log is hooked (or chained), it is lifted off the ground with the 3pt. All this weight of the end of the log is shifted to the rear wheels. I hope this makes sense. ....

Just be aware that log skidding is dangerous enough with a skider, and much more so with a tractor. There are a number of long discussions on tractor skidding and logging safety in the archives. Some of the content may be excessively safety oriented, but reading the discussions would be a very good thing. Take note that a good-sized log on a 3ph can easily flip a tractor.
